Oftentimes, breast cancer comes in the form of a malignant lump in your breast. If the biopsy determines this lump to be malignant then what you have is breast cancer. Now, one of the treatments for breast cancer is surgery. When the malignant lump is diagnosed early, and it has not yet spread, it can be surgically removed. This procedure is known as lumpectomy, where in the only the lump is surgically removed. However, if the lump has already grown bigger and has affected a major area in your breast then a mastectomy has to be performed. Mastectomy is the removal of one or two breasts.
Another treatment for breast cancer is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is a treatment modality that involves the infusion of chemotherapeutic drugs that are specifically designed to kill malignant cells. Chemotherapy is prescribed according to cycles. After each cycle, the patient is evaluated. The downside of this treatment though is that it has a lot of side effects, which can be attributed with the death of normal cells surrounding the malignant cells when the drugs attack it.
Radiation is another breast cancer treatment. Unlike chemotherapy, radiotherapy does not make use of drugs, but rather it uses high-powered X-rays that have a capacity to kill cancer cells. Levels of these rays are regulated. However, health care personnel providing this type of treatment are expected to protect themselves since radiation is also attributed to cell mutation.
